Meet the Family Behind Focus Karate
For families looking for kids' martial arts classes in Northeast Philadelphia, Focus Karate has been a trusted part of the community for more than 26 years. Located in the Somerton neighborhood, this family-owned martial arts studio has helped hundreds of children build confidence, discipline, and leadership skills as they learn the art of karate.
Macaroni KID Northeast Philadelphia recently sat down with co-owner and Chief Instructor Scott to learn more about the studio's story and what makes Focus Karate such a special place for local families. Scott's journey began when he was just 8 years old and enrolled in karate as a student. Years later, when his instructor opened a school in Northeast Philadelphia, Scott's father—despite never having practiced martial arts himself—became one of the business partners. Today, the father-and-son team continues to lead Focus Karate together, with Scott overseeing instruction and student development while his father manages the day-to-day business operations.
That combination of family values, decades of experience, and a passion for helping children grow has made Focus Karate a longstanding resource for families throughout Northeast Philadelphia.

What Makes Focus Karate Different From Other Martial Arts Schools?
At Focus Karate, every child is treated as an individual. Before students even step onto the mat, Scott takes the time to get to know them, talk about their goals, and understand what they hope to gain from their martial arts journey. Whether a child wants to build confidence, learn self-defense, stay active, or simply try something new, the instruction is tailored to help them grow in the areas that matter most.
Scott also believes that learning should be fun. While many children walk through the doors feeling nervous or unsure of themselves, they're encouraged to embrace the challenge, celebrate their progress, and enjoy the process of learning something new. It's an environment where kids are supported every step of the way, no matter where they're starting.
While there are many benefits to martial arts, Focus Karate stands out because of its emphasis on character development alongside physical skills. The studio teaches Tang Soo Do, a traditional martial art that places a strong focus on respect, responsibility, perseverance, and leadership. Students aren't just learning kicks and forms; they're developing life skills they'll carry with them long after class is over.
One of the most unique parts of the program is the leadership opportunities students receive as they advance. Before earning a black belt, students are expected to teach a class to younger students as well as the other requirements needed to obtain the black belt . This added element builds confidence, independence, communication skills, and a sense of pride as they discover they can lead and encourage others.
Programs for Every Age
Whether your child is just getting started or has previous martial arts experience, Focus Karate offers classes for a wide range of ages and skill levels. Kids can begin as early as age 5, which Scott feels is the perfect age for children to engage with the instruction and begin developing the focus, confidence, and discipline that martial arts encourages.
Classes are divided by both age and experience level, allowing beginners to build a strong foundation while more advanced students continue to challenge themselves. Focus Karate also offers adult classes, and many teens have the opportunity to transition into those classes as they grow. The studio welcomes students of all genders, with Scott sharing that nearly half of their students are girls—a reflection of how martial arts can benefit every child.

Ready to Give Karate a Try?
If you're considering martial arts for your child, Scott recommends starting with a trial class. Rather than signing up right away, families are encouraged to visit the studio, meet the instructors, and experience a class firsthand. His goal is for every family to feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.
"Our school feels more like a family," Scott shared, and that sense of community is something they work hard to create for every student.
For Scott, karate has never been just about earning the next belt. It's about helping children build confidence, develop strong character, and discover they're capable of more than they ever imagined. After more than 26 years serving Northeast Philadelphia families, Focus Karate continues to make a lasting impact—one student at a time.
