Step into a world of wonder at the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival at Franklin Square—a magical, family-friendly event that’s perfect for all ages. With towering illuminated lanterns in the shapes of dragons, pandas, and mythical creatures, the festival transforms the park into a glowing celebration of art and culture. Families can stroll through colorful light displays, enjoy interactive exhibits, and be amazed by nightly live performances including acrobatics and traditional Chinese dance. Whether you’re capturing the perfect photo, savoring tasty treats, or simply soaking in the dazzling atmosphere, the Chinese Lantern Festival offers an unforgettable night out the whole family will love.
My family and I were able to visit the Festival this week, and it was an awesome display! There was a chance of thunderstorms, so we decided to get there a little before dark to make sure we were able to see everything in the event it rained. The display is beautiful even before dark, so if you don't want to keep the little ones out too late don't worry, it is definitely worth visiting when it is light out as well!
Not only are there beautiful displays at the Festival, but there is live entertainment too! We made it in time for the first show at 7:30, and it did not disappoint! The show consisted of 5 different acts, each more exciting than the next. There were hat jugglers, acrobatics, and balancing acts that were amazing to watch!
Once the show was over we were able to continue walking among the different displays. My personal favorite was the huge dragon! We also loved the colorful fish and insects!
And don't worry about getting hungry! The Festival has plenty of food and drink options to choose from, as well as a covered pavilion area called the Octopus Cocktail Garden to sit, grab a cocktail, and take a rest! Some food choices include fried dumplings, assorted Asian-inspired options, as well as traditional fare from SquareBurger and Chickie & Pete's. Other events include Cultural Connection demonstrations on Sundays (free with festival admission), folk artists, and giveaways! Click here for a schedule of special events!
As the evening progressed those pesky thunderstorms did wind up rolling in, so we did have to leave a little earlier than anticipated. However, we were offered tickets to return, and can't wait to go back! The Festival is open in the event of light rain, however, they will close if there are thunderstorms in the area or other severe weather, so make sure you keep an eye on the forecast when heading out!
